Shrirang Deshmukh’s ( Ranga) life changes when all of a sudden he gets the ability to hear what women are thinking. 2. Aajcha Diwas Majha

Language: Marathi

Genre: Drama

IMDB Rating: 7.6

“Political movies, until now have shown people striving for the chair and power, but ‘Aajcha Divas Majha’ defines the hard stand taken up by a conscientious chief minister fighting to keep the self-esteem alive! The story inserts a ray of hope in political surroundings where emotions have little or no value.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aajcha_Divas_Majha

Winner of National Film Award for Best Marathi Film 2014 is a call against bureaucracy and corruption. If all your favourite movies revolve around the theme of good guys fighting against the bad guys, this might just be your movie with a twist.

3.Half Ticket

Language: Marathi

Genre: Drama/Family

Year: 2016

IMDB Rating: 7.8

Available on: Amazon Prime Video

Simple and heart-touching story of two slum kids aspiring to have pizza at a newly opened pizza shop in their locality. It shows us harsh reality coupled with the innocence and hopefulness of the two kids. It is a must watch for everyone.

Ganesh Matkari of Pune Mirror gave the film a rating of 3.5 out of 5 and said that, “Half Ticket is like a fable, which ends on a positive note, but gives us a lot to think about. I believe the film has a repeat viewing value due to its rich content, and the film should reveal more after each viewing.”

4. Chal Mann Jeetva Jaiye

Language: Gujarati

Genre: Drama/Family

Year: 2017

A tough situation usually changes the entire dynamics of a family. This is very aptly depicted in the movie. This is one of those movies that you cannot watch only once and each time you watch it again you learn something new.

The movie is a dilemma between what is right and wrong. It details family emotions and forces you to think deeply about each character and his individuality.  A family in financial crisis must decide whether to declare bankruptcy or to sell all their assets and start again from nothing.

5. Bonus

Language: Marathi

Genre: Drama

It is a complete package; Humour, Love story, emotions and meaningful content. Aditya is not very keen on giving bonus to the employees, but his grandfather disagrees and challenges him to live one month in the shoes of a common man. Will he be able to survive the month?

The humour and awkwardness in the movie makes it enjoyable. The life lessons he learns along the way are BONUS.

6. Oh!! Baby

Language: Telugu

Genre: Drama/Family

Year: 2019

IMDB Rating: 7.4

A 70 year old woman is suddenly transformed into a 24 year old young lady. It is funny how even after the transformation she behaves in some ways like a 70 year old lady. She goes on to participate in a singing reality show and her journey towards looking at life differently. It is a very fun watch.

The movie is slightly lengthy nonetheless perfect for a Saturday night Netflix and Chill. I don’t understand telugu yet the songs are amazing. They are melodious and heart touching.

7. Double Seat

Language: Marathi

Genre: Family

Year: 2015

IMDB Rating: 7.8

A newly-wed couple has high aspirations of buying a house in Mumbai. The movie showcases their journey and struggles. It feels like a slice of real life. It is very different from most Indian movies because it doesn’t show that life is fair, it doesn’t show that if you work very hard the very first effort will bear fruit. It shows life as it is. Great movie to watch with family and friends.

8. Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy

Language: Marathi

The movie talks about what it means to be a true Maharashtrian.  It inspires us to accept our culture and be proud of it. It touches certain political issues prevailing in Maharashtra. It is the story of a middle class man who faces constant dejection until he is guided by Shivaji Maharaji himself. It is a very interesting watch. A story of struggles and then coming out victorious is always a delight to watch.

9. Oxygen

IMDB Rating: 8.2

What’s in a name? that which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet.” ― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet.  Watch the movie to know what the quote means.

Human need for love, care and affection is depicted in this movie. I don’t want to reveal much about the movie not even its story line. It is one of the most unique concepts in an Indian movie. It may be right or may not be. Please let me know in the comment section below what is your take on the movie.

10. Dr. Prakash Baba Amte – The Real Hero

Language: Marathi

Genre: Biopic

Year: 2014

IMDB Rating: 8.7

Available on: Zee5

It is a movie based on the real life of Dr. Prakash Baba Amte. His love for all creatures big and small extended to animals which the movie shows very beautifully. The journey, sacrifices and unconventional choices of Dr. Amte and his wife gives us many new perspectives in life. It is simple, crude and very inspiring. It is a story of his hardships and his social service as a doctor to tribals.

A bonus watch…

This movie was fairly popularized recently hence didn’t make it to the top 10 but in case you missed it.

11. AB ani CD

Language: Marathi

Genre: Drama/Family

Year: 2020

IMDB Rating: 6.7

Available on: Amazon Prime Video

The movie is about an old man and his life after retirement. He is taken for granted until they receive a letter saying that Amitabh Bachchan was his childhood classmate. The outlook of people changes towards him entirely.

The movie is unique because the issue related to aging; losing a partner and loneliness are addressed very sensitively and sometimes not so subtly. The highlight of the movie has to be Vikram Sir’s performance. It is absolutely amazing.
