One of my Top Must Watch Shows, I liked it so much that I felt it requires a separate post of its own. Elizabeth McCord is appointed the Secretary of State by the President of the United States of America. It is about how she balances work and life solving important world problems such as war and climate change through diplomacy. It shows us the workings of the state department.
Every episode leaves you with a lesson. Unlike Indian TV shows and movies that revolve only around one protagonist, Madam Secretary brings out the individuality of every character. I occasionally enjoy light comedy no-brainer shows but the shows that I enjoy the most are usually the ones that are gripping, entertaining, and also give me some food for thought. This is definitely one of those.
I breezed through the first 4 seasons, I felt the 5th season got a little boring but excited to resume watching and complete the series by watching the final series on Voot. It is a long show and will keep you entertained for weeks. Now, Top 5 reasons why I love the show along with my favourite quotes from the show:
#1 It is very informative
“Forget about liberals, conservatives, all that party stuff. What Americans yearn for is the leader with the guts to tell the truth and the charisma to lead us.”
For most of us who have gone through either the State Board or the CBSE Syllabus, we are unaware of what the position of Secretary of State means. As the show unravels we learn a lot about how the departments in a huge government organization work. I understand it is a fictional show but the insights that we can gain about world politics and diplomacy are very unique.
#2 Team Work and Dedication
“I am fully prepared to live with the consequences of my actions, what i couldn’t live with were the consequences of my inactions”
Elizabeth McCord chooses her staff intelligently and each member plays a vital role in the administration. Taking responsibility and making the most of available time and resources are aptly portrayed various times in the show. People with different backgrounds and ethnicities bring different flavors with them.
#3 Making Your Way
“A Good Idea Is Meaningless Without The Courage To Act”
A very important lesson to learn in life is learning how to make your way and get things done. All of us face situations where the decision-maker is someone else like a boss or a parent and we must convince them to see things from a different perspective. Elizabeth’s boss was The President himself and it is remarkable how she persuaded him to take the right decision at critical times.
#4 Family Values and dynamics
“You Are Not A Burden Because You Need To Be Taken Care Of”
The show very delicately addresses various family-related issues. It is heart-warming to watch how Elizabeth and Henry handle their three children, all teenagers in the midst of all that is already going on. Also, the relationship between Elizabeth and Henry is very endearing and a delight to watch. Married or not all of us can learn a thing or two about relationships and family in this series.
#5 It inspires you and fills you with hope
“You Never Know Until You Try.”
The show is a breath of fresh air amidst all shows about violence and corruption. Henry and Elizabeth are both ethically correct and morally sound. The love they have for their country and the kind of things that can be accomplished through hard work and intelligence inspires you to not only dream big but also fills you with the hope that there is still good in the world.
